How to choose an export market

Choosing the wrong market is the most expensive decision an exporter can make.

Before chasing buyers, decide where to compete. The right market is the one where your product has real demand, where you can meet the rules, and where the operation is viable.

Four questions to ask

  1. Is there real demand for my product? Look at the market's imports, not just its size.
  2. Can I meet the rules? Duties, rules of origin, standards, certifications and documentation.
  3. Is the operation viable? Shipping, payment, insurance, incoterms, delivery lead time.
  4. Do I have a credible buyer path? Distributors, importers, tenders, marketplaces.
